Anarchy Online - My Arrival On Rubi-ka
Published on December 17, 2004 By Danny Bassette In MMORPG
Well I sucessfully downloaded Anarchy Online today. As BlueDev mentioned they are doing a free for a year thing, so I figured I might as well try it. 817 megabytes did take a while to download, although BitTorrent did make it easier. Install went fine and all, and I now have three characters sitting in the arrival hall.
As usual when games give me a choice, my character is a girl. Looking through the available professions I made an engineer, metaphysicist and fixer. It was funny, yet another game with lots of ugly faces in character creation. And it didn't let me use spaces in the character names, which was mildly annoying.
So far the starting feels like it fits a nice story. You arrive at a space station, then fly down to the planet, where you crash in a battle zone. From a recreating character standpoint it's silly, everyone crashes. But from a first time playing it is nice, drops you into things with a little story. Tomorrow I might leave the starting spaceport, or not, who knows.
Anyone care to guess how long it takes me to become addicted to another evil MMORPG

If you've already started blogging about it... I guess it won't be too long. *G*

I haven't been able to get it downloaded yet. For some reason the torrent doesn't want to download here at work any faster than 9 kb/s, and last night I was up all night making VCDs of the kids for their grandparents. But as soon as I have it I am going to give it a try, hopefully this weekend.

Anarchy Online was great when I played it a couple years ago. Theres nothing quite like it out there, and its on my shortlist of the best MMOs ever made. Vehicles, ships, massive immersive landscapes and cities, this game has it all really.

I think I might go back to it, i've been totally unsatisfied with the latest crop of MMO's, and figure it would be worth it for free.

Its a very deep, compelling game, with great gameplay. You'll find that out soon enough - but keep in mind it has a hard learning curve - but all the best games do!

Ravenblack: Probably not Although, I did check JoeUser before logging back in this morning, guess that shows my priorities at least
BlueDev: Is your torrent behind a firewall? I couldn't get over 9kbs until I punched a hole through the firewall, then poof 60kbs.
Drop me a line if/when you get on and we could team up to die together hehe, maybe we could form a JoeUser clan or whatever they call it.

I don't think so. But then again, I am using Duke Medical Center's wireless LAN. At home I was getting much better results, so when I get home tonight I am just going to start it and let it run. I don't think Duke likes me downloading big files. No worries though. I will definately look you up, I think the idea of newbs teaming up is a smart one.

I played AO from the disastrous start (which wasn't really as bad as some people have said) for maybe 18 months. Kobrano is right about the learning curve. You can spend days just working out how to maximise your character (never mind the time getting the parts you need) for your particular playing style. I've tried to go back twice but the first time it was like everything had moved on so far that nobody I knew was still playing and in the meantime there had been so many changes that it just wasn't the same game I'd been playing. The second time was after the Alien Invasion expansion came out - I tried it but by then it just wasn't pretty enough for me. To my knowledge they invented instanced dungeons and did away with corpse runs and for that I thank them. It's still my favourite MMORPG but only looking back.
